10/22/2002 Archived Entry: "Flash MX Video Samples"

I've just added a new video portfolio section on duber dot com that highlights many of the new features in Flash MX and the new Flash Player version 6. Of interest to CALL developers is the ability to deliver high quality streaming audio and video at low data rates (even over a modem).

I hope to continue a discussion of the authoring process in the 'Comments' section of this item.

Please feel free to add your comments and questions on the video portfolio application.

For now, I'll keep the description pretty basic:

I used several of the pre-built components to build the interactive tree menu and window system. I adapted the default behaviors of these objects for my own purposes. I want to thank Bernhard Gaul for his sample of how to extend the tree menu. This really gave me a jump-start with the code.

The menu loads the content data from an external XML source. This makes it very easy to extend and maintain. The media files are loaded externally as well, which helps keep the file size of the initial interface very small (56 K). This version of Flash allows external loading of several media types of interest to CALL developers, namely images (as jpg files), audio (as MP3 files) video (in the Flash MX format), and other Flash movies. All in all, this is a very powerful combination for delivery of interactive language lesssons over the web. This really just touches the surface on what's possible.

Can't you tell I'm excited?!?!?!?
